Do You Need a Great Camera to Take Great Photographs?

Well, no. In fact, you could probably sell your digital camera right now and still be able to take great photographs without it.

Taking a great picture requires a camera, certainly – but more than that it requires a good eye, and more than often a lot of luck and good timing.

Reality vs Photography: Photoshop

Wednesday, June 24th, 2015

Thanks to our extensive knowledge of the camera industry, we  know a few cheats people use to get the best picture. In this day and age we’re bombarded with images of the perfect this and the perfect that. Glossy lifestyle magazines produce endless photos of stunning men and women showing off their best bits while motor head magazines show off show room cars in seductive lighting. Our Facebooks, Twitter and now the infamous Instagram are plastered with stunning, breathtaking and downright strange photos for our entertainment. But how many of these pictures are real and how many are simply feats of photography?

Photoshop

When it comes to digital alterations we can quite certainly point the finger at Photoshop and other computer systems dedicated to altering your photos image. Blemishes, wrinkle lines, age spots and prominent pores can all be erased and colour can be added with a simple click of a button. Where once photographs used to be our main source of evidence next to our own eye sight, thanks to modern day technology we don’t know if what we’re seeing is the real version of an image or an altered one. A Trick of the Light: Famous Photo Hoaxes

Friday, June 12th, 2015

Modern photography goes far beyond taking still-life snapshots to commemorate your holiday tan; with advanced techniques and computer manipulation, you can make almost anything appear on the glossy paper of your photo print. Of course, these powers should only be used for good, and when they are incredible art and even social commentary can be created.

On the slightly darker side of photo manipulation are the hoaxes, and although we don’t recommend trying to replicate them, it can’t be denied that they have a fascinating and rich history – and can show us just how much is possible with a camera and as much imagination as you can get your hand on.

The Cottingley Fairies

Is this the most famous photo hoax of all time? The two cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths have gone down in history for their 5 shots which appeared to show them playing with fairies. Although the original pictures were taken in 1917, it took until the 70s for them to be definitively debunked. Although Elsie’s father was never convinced, they captured the imagination of an era of spiritualism and discovery – with Arthur Conan Doyle being among those captivated. (more…)

Capturing Great Nature Photographs

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

Last week, the internet went mad for a photo of a lizard that appeared to be channelling Jimi Hendrix as it strummed a guitar-like leaf.

This photo is an excellent example of the perfect nature photo, and it inspired us at Camera Exchange Store to help you capture nature photographs that are just as spectacular.

Patience

The key to taking any great photo is patience, and this is crucial if you want to take a great photo while out in the wild.

In nature, you won’t be able to control your subjects or your surroundings. Don’t be in a rush to get your picture; wait for the right lighting, frame and event to capture. If you’re patient, sooner or later you’ll get a photo that you’re completely happy with.

3 Professional Photography Effects that Anybody Can Use

Monday, January 12th, 2015

Photographic effects can be the difference between a boring photograph and one that is breathtaking. Some effects are difficult to produce and require specialist and expensive equipment and professional knowledge, however there are also many that anybody can easily create. In this post we’ve given you simple explanations on how you can create some professional effects that will greatly improve your photographs. Starting with…

Panning

Panning is an effect that produces a photograph with a clear and sharp subject, but a blurred background, adding movement to an image. The effect is in theory rather easy to produce but it does take a bit of practise before you get used to it. You can achieve this effect simply by moving with your subject and keeping them in the same place in the viewfinder. You can tweak the blurriness of the background by altering the aperture and the speed of the subject (if you have control of this). It may be tricky to use this effect on a fast moving subject like a car unless you are in another car that is driving alongside it, but you can certainly give it a go!
