Take Stunning Snaps with Your Smartphone: a Beginners Guide

These days, there’s no need to fork out for a fancy camera full of the latest features when you’ve got the most accessible and versatile pieces of equipment sat in your coat pocket. With constant upgrades in mobile devices more focussed on their camera and photography features, people may be less inclined to invest in a clunky DSLR and current snappers may even be looking sell their Pentax camera for something slicker.

Now you’ve mastered the art of the selfie, here’s how you can make the most of the camera on your phone.

Which devices have the best cameras?

Understandably, you don’t want to spend too much money on a phone or else it defeats the object and you might as well have spent the same amount on a digital camera. With this in mind, it might be an idea to start up a contract with a handset if you haven’t done so already.

These days pretty much every smartphone is equipped with the latest camera features, especially in a world where Apple is storming the technology market. Amongst the devices that have rated the best this year are the Samsung Galaxy S6, iPhone 6S Plus, Sony Xperia Z5 and HTC One A9.

Figure out your features.

You may only be familiar with a handful of settings on your phone, including how to switch the flash on and off and landscape vs portrait. But your phone may offer options that you didn’t know were there.

Often, the only pictures that people take on their phones are blurry, dim-lit pictures of nights out and pictures of their pets in human clothes, which don’t expose them to the camera’s capabilities.

It’s rare when you take a particularly striking picture with one click. Nothing is more disappointing than finding that a moment you wanted to capture came out blurry in the one shot you took.

Thankfully, a lot of phones are equipped with a shutter option, or with the iPhone, a ‘burst’ option which takes multiple shots within a matter of seconds to give you a range of images to choose from. This is particularly helpful when taking pictures of objects in motion which can often give you the perfect shot.

Shutter speed also comes in handy if you haven’t got the steadiest hand, which is why you’d probably need a tripod if you had any wish to take the perfect panorama.

Conditions.

Lastly, in order to get the best quality out of your photos, you need to ensure your conditions accommodate your subject and a lot of this is to do with lighting. Good lighting is the difference between photographs looking amateur versus something worthy of a professional.

Detail gets lost in darkness, and colour loses its vibrancy in a dimly lit area. Taking your camera outside can automatically lift the quality of your photos as this natural light has the potential to illuminate your surroundings.
