In fact, throughout the years, many people – from royals and politicians to actors and singers – have commissioned them. However, you don’t have to part with your cash like they did. Instead, you can capture your own family portrait with the right camera and a keen eye for detail. Here are a few tips to get started.

Preliminary

First things first you’ll need to decide who’s getting in on the action. Will it be just immediate family or will you allow other relatives to get involved? Once you’ve made this choice you’ll need to lock down a date when everyone is available.

Order

As the photographer, you’re in charge. Therefore, you need to come up with an order that is flattering and practical. Consider factors such as height, age and relationships during this step.

Lighting

You might need to bring in a few lamps to get the lighting you desire. It’s unlikely you’ll capture everyone perfectly with just the ceiling light, so don’t forget to think ahead before it’s time for the portrait.

Background

Obviously, it might not be practical to snap the image in front of a clear white screen. But that doesn’t mean you should just choose any old setting. Be sure to consider the background and any objects that may be out of place. If in doubt, line your subjects up in front of a blank wall or head to a park or other picturesque setting – just ensure the weather is fine!

Wardrobe

Ideally, you’ll want people to feel comfortable in their own clothes – and you won’t want to come across like a power-hungry photographer who’s telling people what to wear. However, you can offer small bits of advice that would improve the final result. In particular, try and steer people away from wearing bright colours that may clash.

Equipment

If you’re looking to invest in a new camera, we have second-hand cameras to help you take the perfect family portrait.
