If you\u2019re shopping for a new lens of some sort, you\u2019ve come to just the right place. As per the results of my recent reader polls<\/a>, here is a list of the best budget lenses you can get your hands on without breaking the bank too much.<\/p>\n

Before we get into offerings for each specific camera<\/a> brand out there, we want to let you know about a number of other offerings. You see, this blog post was written way back in 2010. We\u2019re updating this post in 2017 and lens technology and offerings have greatly changed since then. These days, the third party camera\/lens manufacturers tend to dominate the market. When it comes to the budget offerings though Rokinon, Tamron and Lensbaby seem to offer some of the best.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 24mm f1.4 ED<\/a>: Years before Sigma was making very high quality wide angle primes with lots of saturation, Rokinon was doing it. The Rokinon 24mm f1.4 ED is no exception in this case<\/a>. When I reviewed it<\/a>, I really fell in love with not only the colors but also the bokeh and sharpness. It\u2019s a great option for street photographers, landscape shooters and architecture shooters. Photographers who want a wide angle walkaround lens will really enjoy it.<\/p>\n

Tamron 35mm f1.8 Di VC USD<\/a>: On this list, the Tamron 35mm f1.8 Di VC USD<\/a> is perhaps my favorite lens offering. I personally have always really warmed up to the 35mm focal length but when you get your hands on a well calibrated version of the lens, you\u2019ll really be blown away. Tamron\u2019s colors stand<\/a> out from all the rest out there and will still really appeal to various photographers. On top of that, consider that all the Tamron lens offerings in this section have a couple of cool features like image stabilization, weather sealing and a metal body.<\/p>\n

Tamron 45mm f1.8 Di VC USD<\/a>: Also on this list is Tamron\u2019s 45mm f1.8 DI VC USD<\/a>. It\u2019s the same price point as the 35mm and essentially renders the same colors. The two lenses are very closely related.<\/p>\n

Model: Erica Lourd. Shot with the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f1.6<\/a>: The Lensbaby Velvet is a pretty great short portrait lens. When shot wide open, it\u2019s going to be pretty soft but have a really nice vintage look to it. When stopped down to f4, it\u2019s going to start to become one of the sharpest but bang for your buck options out there. Check out our review<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n

Tamron 85mm f1.8 Di VC USD<\/a>: If you\u2019re going to get a single 85mm focal length lens on this list, the Tamron 85mm f1.8 Di VC USD<\/a> is the one to go for. It offers really fantastic color rendition, excellent sharpness, great skin tones, weather sealing, image stabilization, and a metal body. Plus, it focuses quickly. If you\u2019re going to go for one single 85mm lens in the budget range, this is surely the only way to go.<\/p>\n

Canon<\/h2>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Canon 50mm F1.8 STM<\/a>: It\u2019s been a while since the 50mm f1.8 was updated, but this year Canon finally did it and added in a brand new STM motor. It focuses much faster, much more silently, and has a bit better image quality. Plus, the feeling of it is much better as is the ergonomic design. If you\u2019re looking for a cheap 50, then you\u2019ll be very hard pressed to beat this one.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When I first moved to Canon, I started out with the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II<\/a>\"\". Though it has some slight quirks to it (autofocus is a bit hard to do at time and can be slow) it is still a wonderful general purpose lens and an excellent lens for when videos need to be shot at something like a concert. Stopped down to F4, it is wonderfully sharp<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you can afford it, the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM<\/a>\"\" is much better and is one of Canon\u2019s best buys due to the f1.4 aperture.<\/p>\n

Canon 100mm Macro 2.8<\/a>\u2013 Known as one of Canon\u2019s sharpest lenses, users will appreciate the versatility available with using a lens like this. One can go from shooting portraits, to macro products, to the fine details at a wedding<\/a>, and to even sports shooting when put in a cropped sensor body like a 7D or a 50D (available at a rebate at the time of writing this article.) One really can\u2019t go wrong with the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

Canon 85mm F1.8<\/a>\u2013 This is my second favorite lens in my camera<\/a> bag. The Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM<\/a>\"\" allows for super sharp portraits<\/a>, headshots, and even candid moments when shooting events or a wedding. What\u2019s great is that you have a telephoto reach without having a really large lens that tends to attract attention: therefore making the photographer more discrete and also allowing them not to disturb their subjects.<\/p>\n

Canon 35mm F2.0<\/a>\u2013 The Canon EF 35mm f2.0<\/a>\"\" is a great lens for events or photojournalism type shooting. This lens is great for capturing environmental portraits, and also for giving a real feel for what the vibe is like at an event. Combined with a flash, it can be great on the dance floor of a party and delivers sharp<\/a> results with wonderful color.<\/p>\n

The lens has since been updated to a new version with IS built in<\/a>. It\u2019s quite a nice piece of glass but a bit more pricey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Canon 40mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 For years, Canon users have been asking for a pancake lens. Though it took them a while, the Canon 40mm f2.8<\/a> is the company\u2019s answer to that challenge and from our review<\/a>, it seems like it was well worth the wait. The 40mm f2.8<\/a> is sharp edge to edge, focuses quickly and is extremely affordable. It\u2019s more than earned its right on this list.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Sigma 50mm f1.4 (First version)<\/a>\u2013 Sigma has updated their 50mm f1.4 to be included into their Art series of lenses, but that doesn\u2019t mean that the first version is a slacker. In fact, we\u2019d like to argue that it is the best 50mm f1.4 lens available to Canon users if you\u2019re also factoring in budget. This one is even better than Canon\u2019s own.<\/p>\n

Tokina 11-16mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 One of the biggest complaints about this list before was its lack of zoom lenses. If you\u2019re looking for one, then consider the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 offering. It\u2019s perfect for APS-C users that want wide angle photos\u2013which means that your landscapes will look that much more epic.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 14mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 If we had to choose a single wide angle prime to stick with, it would be Rokinon\u2019s own 14mm f2.8. With a wide field of view at 14mm and an f2.8 aperture, there is no reason not to spring for this lens. Sure, it\u2019s manual focus only, but if you\u2019re using a lens like this then you\u2019re usually focusing out to infinity anyway.<\/p>\n

Tokina 12-28mm f4<\/a>\u2013 Of any of the wide angle zoom lenses<\/a> that we\u2019ve tested, this one had to be the most fun. Mount it on a camera, put the camera on a tripod and get to the nearest coastline to shoot the sun as it\u2019s about to go down. The colors, sharpness, and price of this lens are all very pleasing.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 85mm f1.4<\/a>\u2013 If you want an f1.4 lens designed for portraits, this is the most affordable one that you can get. Wide open, the lens is a bit soft. But once you stop it down a bit, it begins to sing with sharpness. Like other Rokinon lenses, it is a manual focus only one. But man, that bokeh is glorious.<\/p>\n

Sigma 30mm f1.4 (Second version)<\/a>\u2013 APS-C camera<\/a> users that want a fast 50mm field of view (approximately) will be super surprised by Sigma\u2019s new 30mm f1.4 offering. What\u2019s even cooler is that you can use it on a full frame camera\u2013but don\u2019t expect the image quality to be just like that of an APS-C camera\u2019s due to how this lens was designed.<\/p>\n

Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 II<\/a>\u2013 Though we never formally reviewed the\u00a055-250mm f4-5.6 II<\/a>, we used it many times with the Rebel cameras<\/a> and were pleasantly surprised at how sharp the image quality is. For a small lens that is bundled as a kit option, you\u2019ve got a heck of a sharp<\/a> optic that most people may be forever happy with.<\/p>\n

Nikon 50mm F1.8<\/a>\/F1.4<\/a>\u2013 The Nikon 50mm f1.8D AF<\/a>\"\" is sharper than Canon\u2019s but doesn\u2019t deliver as pleasing out-of-focus areas. In fact, it\u2019s quite a bit sharper and comes with a slightly higher price as well. The\u00a0Nikon 50mm f1.4D AF<\/a>\"\" is used widely at concerts and weddings in addition to photographers who capture portraits with cameras<\/a> like a D300s. Many wedding photographers actually do this and deliver some fantastic and lovely results. I\u2019ve seen some prints from photographers in Brooklyn shooting by the Brooklyn Bridge, and combined with their SB-900 flashes<\/a>, it does some great work on quite the budget.<\/p>\n

Also be sure to consider the newer 50mm F1.8 G<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nikon AF-S 35mm F1.8-<\/a>I\u2019ve tried this lens on the Nikon D3x<\/a> before. For the price, Nikon photographers get a lens that will stick with them in their bags forever. A lens like this is sharp<\/a>, focuses surprisingly fast, and can be used for photo shoots, shooting couples, portraits, weddings, etc. Many portrait photographers I know actually use the Nikon 35mm f1.8G AF-S DX<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Nikkor 28mm F2.8D<\/a>\u2013 Nikon\u2019s wide angle primes are becoming legendary, and the Nikon 28mm f2.8D AF<\/a>\"\" is quite worth its weight in dollars. A lens like this is great for getting up close and personal with your subjects, like children, dogs, etc. Otherwise, it is great for shooting landscapes and some street photography.<\/p>\n

Nikkor 85mm F1.8D<\/a>\u2013 Although it\u2019s not the absolutely gorgeous F1.4<\/a>, the Nikon 85mm f1.8D AF<\/a>\"\" is a lens that is seen on many Nikon photographers\u2019 cameras<\/a>. This lens is the essential lens for portrait photographers and those looking to do in studio work. Stopped down to around F2.8 it becomes super sharp<\/a>. The feel and construction of this lens will also not disappoint.<\/p>\n

Nikon 40mm f2.8 Micro<\/a>\u2013 If you\u2019re a Nikon user looking for a nice macro lens, the 40mm f2.8<\/a> is your answer. Becoming essentially a 60mm f2.8 lens, it is an interesting perspective leaning towards the longer side of the normal field of view range. Combined with a fast f2.8 aperture, it\u2019s the lens you\u2019ll want to tote around when you want to do a couple of projects at home.<\/p>\n

Panasonic 20mm F1.7 II<\/a>-Though the first version of the lens is quite good and even a tad sharper, the newer update to this lens gives us a significantly better build quality and super quick focusing.<\/p>\n

As perhaps the most favorite lens amongst Micro Four Thirds photographers, the original\u00a0Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f1.7<\/a>\"\" delivers wonderful results in all types of lighting and also does this in a small pancake type body. It has since been refreshed, and despite it not being as sharp as the previous version, the new version has better construction. Still, if you can find the older one, hold onto it.<\/p>\n

Olympus M. Zukio 17mm F2.8<\/a>\u2013 An alternative to the 20mm for those that want a wider field of view, the Olympus 17mm f2.8 Lens<\/a>\"\" is still a great lens for the Micro Four Thirds system due to sharp image quality and wide aperture. It has since been discontinued, but if you can snag it you\u2019ll be in for a treat. Olympus\u2019s own 17mm f1.8 is a bit too expensive for our liking.<\/p>\n

Olympus 45mm f1.8<\/a>\u2013 Despite the fact that everyone drools over the Olympus 75mm f1.8<\/a>, this is the lens we recommend more than any others due to the wider field of view and the fast f1.8 aperture. This is the lens you\u2019ll want to shoot wide open or just barely stopped down all day and all night. And if you\u2019re a Micro Four Thirds users going for a budget friendly option, this is the best you can get.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Olympus 60mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 The Olympus 60mm f2.8 is another macro lens option\u2013but the killer feature of this lens is the weather sealing. We\u2019ve tested it out and we approve; it\u2019s sharp, contrasty, and really overall quite good. As always though, we recommend using flashes to take advantage of specular highlights.<\/p>\n

Olympus 25mm f1.8<\/a>\u2013 While we really enjoyed the 45mm f1.8<\/a>, we were a bit hesitant and skeptical about how the 25mm f1.8<\/a> would perform despite the two lenses have nearly identical construction. And oh man were we wrong. The 25mm f1.8 is one of the best and sharpest offerings that we\u2019ve tested for the Micro Four Thirds system. That and it\u2019s affordable\u2013much more so than Panasonic\u2019s 25mm f1.4.<\/p>\n

Sigma 19mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 The image quality of both the first and second versions of these lenses are comparable\u2013but what really changed is the build quality. The newer ones have faster focusing and a sleeker body while the older versions have a bit more grip on them. Still, if you want something fairly wide and sharp, look no further than this offering from Sigma.<\/p>\n

Tokina 300mm f6.3<\/a>\u2013\u00a0Seems like a weird choice, right? We chose this lens because of the serious lack of telephoto lenses here and the creative possibilities that can happen when you have donut shaped bokeh. Sure, it isn\u2019t the sharpest lens, but if you get past that and just stick to creating then you\u2019ll enjoy the colors and the fact that you can probably see your neighbor bustin\u2019 a move to some 90s jams while they think that no one is looking.<\/p>\n

Sony Alpha A Mount<\/a> and E Mount<\/a><\/h2>\n

Sony 50mm F1.8 DT<\/a>\u2013 Designed specifically for Sony<\/a> APS-C sensor sized cameras<\/a>, the venerable Sony 50mm F1.8<\/a>\"\"will allow your Sony DSLR to photograph subjects with razor thin depth of field while rendering a gorgeous out of focus area. Of all the 50mm F\/1.8 lenses I\u2019ve tried, this one perhaps has the best build quality to it. Like all 50mm lenses, if you\u2019re able to throw down a bit more money then you can get the Sony 50mm f1.4 Lens<\/a>\"\"designed for full frame DSLRs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sony 35mm F1.8<\/a>\u2013 On an APS-C sensor DSLR it will be around 50mm. Students, hobbyists, street photographers trying to remain incognito, and portrait shooters will come to appreciate the Sony 35mm F1.8<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

Those of you that want to stick with Sony<\/a> for the long run should strongly consider this lens because the Sony 35mm F1.4<\/a>\"\"may be out of your price range for a while.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Sony 28mm F2.8<\/a>\u2013 This is the lens designed for people that want to shoot wider. For the price point, there is little to complain about.<\/p>\n

Sony 85mm F2.8<\/a>\u2013 It\u2019s a pity that Sony<\/a> doesn\u2019t have an F\/1.8 lens<\/a> in this focal length. However, for the price point (as this is a budget lens compilation) you\u2019ll find that this can be a more affordable option than what the competition has to offer.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 8mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 This is a fast aperture fisheye lens, but the images that we captured with it were some of the best we\u2019ve seen with an NEX camera. Rokinon lenses render color differently than everyone else and because they are manual focus optics, they can focus much more on putting in some top notch glass.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Sony 20mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 Sony\u2019s only pancake lens is also incredibly good. When used with your E mount<\/a> camera, it will make the entire package a lot more compact. In fact, you may even be able to stuff certain cameras with this lens attached into a jacket pocket.<\/p>\n

Sony 50mm f1.8 NEX<\/a>\u2013 This is a big one; of any lens made by Sony<\/a>, the 50mm f1.8 has to be hands down the sharpest optic that we\u2019ve tested for the system thus far. It\u2019s contrasty, sharp, and takes advantage of any Sony<\/a> NEX sensor to create some beautiful bokeh and images that will leave you bedazzled.<\/p>\n

Sony 35mm f1.8 NEX<\/a>\u2013 This a also one of Sony\u2019s sharp optics, but it isn\u2019t as sharp as we originally expected it to be. After some thought though, it made sense as to why it isn\u2019t\u2013and the trade off is that there is image stabilization built into the lens. Generally, when there is stabilization, the image quality can suffer because the elements need to be made smaller for the function to work. But trust us, it\u2019s still very much worth it.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG<\/a>\u2013 The one lens that we\u2019ve become absolutely, positively smitten with for Canon DSLR owners is the Sigma 35mm f1.4\u2013but it\u2019s also available for Sony A mount<\/a>. It\u2019s the fastest wide aperture 35mm available for the system, and you\u2019ll enjoy every image that you snap with it.<\/p>\n

Sigma 19mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 The image quality of both the first and second versions of these lenses are comparable\u2013but what really changed is the build quality. The newer ones have faster focusing and a sleeker body while the older versions have a bit more grip on them. Still, if you want something fairly wide and sharp, look no further than this offering from Sigma.<\/p>\n

Sony 28mm f2<\/a>\u2013 If you\u2019re a Sony A7 series camera user, then the absolute most affordable and bang for your buck lens is the company\u2019s 28mm f2. It offers a 28mm full frame field of view coverage along with great sharpness, fast focusing speed, a fairly small size, a build that can stand<\/a> up to the elements, and amazing bokeh for what this lens actually is\u2013a fast wide angle prime.<\/p>\n

Pentax<\/h2>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Pentax 50mm F1.4<\/a>\u2013 Most Pentax users will know from reading and research around the interwebs that Pentax\u2019s strength lies with their prime lenses. For portrait shooters using their APS-C sized DSLRs<\/a> (not that Pentax makes a full frame at the time of writing this posting) this will be your ideal focal length because of how flat the lens will render the image when combined with the sensor. The faster aperture of the Pentax 50mm F1.4<\/a>\"\"will mean that if you have an older DSLR that you won\u2019t always have to raise the ISOs to nuclear meltdown levels.<\/p>\n

If I were to recommend one lens to get, this would be it.<\/p>\n

Pentax 35mm F2.4<\/a>\u2013 The Pentax 35mm F2.4<\/a>\"\"is a lens that will give users an approximate 50mm field of view. As the ultimate street photography lens for APS-C DSLRs<\/a> at this price point, you\u2019ll perhaps want to set your camera to aperture priority and leave it wide open at F\/2.4 in order to capture all you\u2019ll need for your street scenes. Perhaps this is what gives it loads of value at this price.<\/p>\n

\"Chris<\/a><\/p>\n

Pentax 40mm F2.8 Limited<\/a>\u2013 Pentax\u2019s line of Limited lenses are coveted by all Pentaxians. Having an affordable option in this small package will make you the cool kid on the block amongst your Pentaxian kin. The Pentax DA 40mm f2.8<\/a>\"\"pancake will be a must-have option for photographers that like to remain discrete or those that always want to keep their cameras on them. Without a larger prime or a bulky zoom lens, you won\u2019t have any excuse to have your camera on you at all.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 85mm f1.4<\/a>\u2013 If you want an f1.4 lens designed for portraits, this is the most affordable one that you can get. Wide open, the lens is a bit soft. But once you stop it down a bit, it begins to sing with sharpness. Like other Rokinon lenses, it is a manual focus only one. But man, that bokeh is glorious.<\/p>\n

Sigma 30mm f1.4 (Second version)<\/a>\u2013 APS-C camera users that want a fast 50mm field of view (approximately) will be super surprised by Sigma\u2019s new 30mm f1.4 offering. What\u2019s even cooler is that you can use it on a full frame camera\u2013but don\u2019t expect the image quality to be just like that of an APS-C camera\u2019s due to how this lens was designed.<\/p>\n

27mm f2.8<\/a>\u2013 As currently the only pancake lens for the Fujifilm X<\/a> series system, it\u2019s a bit pricey but for the small size and focusing\/image quality performance like this you really can\u2019t go wrong. It isn\u2019t amongst the sharpest lenses in the lineup, but it is still sharper than many other offerings you may come across.<\/p>\n

35mm f1.4<\/a>\u2013 This lens is still our favorite for the system. It was one of the original three released with the inception of the system and has since received various firmware updates to improve it. At this point, there is almost nothing to complain about.<\/p>\n

18mm f2<\/a>\u2013 As another lens for the system to launch right out of the gate, its small size and image quality is also something to seriously consider. Of all of the X series lenses, this one is often sold for the steepest discount if you get lucky.<\/p>\n

60mm f2.4 Macro<\/a>\u2013 This is one of the company\u2019s first lenses, and when you add a flash into the scene, it\u2019s surprisingly sharp. What I really like is how it renders skin tones.<\/p>\n

Rokinon 50mm f1.2<\/a>: Oh man, if you\u2019re going to get any single portrait lens for the Fujifilm X<\/a> series, this is the one lens that you\u2019ll really want. It\u2019s sharp, contrasty and offers really fantastic image quality.<\/p>\n
