For anybody who wants to get serious with photography, this may be one of the most important questions. There\u2019s an incredibly diverse range of camera equipment, and some of it can seem incredibly expensive to somebody just starting out with photography as a hobby or career. However, as we\u2019ve pointed out before, you don\u2019t necessarily need a great camera to take great photographs. So when do you need to upgrade?<\/p>\n

For anybody who just wants to take a few snaps now and then to capture a moment and preserve family memories, you may not even need a camera at all. These days, the chances are you have a pretty powerful digital camera in your smartphone, and if you know how to use it well you can get some really impressive results. Alternatively, you might start out with a basic point-and-click camera.<\/p>\n

Whichever you have as your starting equipment, you\u2019ll be able to learn most of the basic principles, such as framing and composition, lighting, etc., with this basic kit. You\u2019ll also easily be able to transfer your pictures to a computer for some quick touch-ups in image editing software like Photoshop.<\/p>\n

For many, this is all the kit they need \u2013 and if you\u2019re able to take the pictures you want to take with this kit, then by all means carry on as you are!<\/p>\n

However, if you find you\u2019re really getting into your photography, you\u2019ll increasingly find that you can\u2019t achieve the results you want with the kit that you have. This is the answer to that magic question \u2013 this is the point at which you need to upgrade.<\/p>\n

Ask yourself this: what is it you want to achieve with your photography that your current kit doesn\u2019t allow? What kit will allow you to do this? Do you need a whole new camera, or can you improve your photography with a few well-chosen accessories?<\/p>\n

It can be tempting to get a new camera just because you\u2019ve seen one that\u2019s better than what you have, because it\u2019s brand new and has astonishing capabilities (like the ability to zoom in on the moon<\/a>) or even (let\u2019s be honest) because you think a bigger camera will make you look more impressive. These aren\u2019t the best reasons for upgrading; extra capabilities might sound good on paper, but if you\u2019re not at the stage in your photography where you\u2019ll actually be using them, you\u2019re just spending money on nothing.<\/p>\n

Get just what you need, when you need it, and you\u2019ll be able to evolve as a photographer without ever needing to break the bank.<\/p>\n
