Though you may have a constant stream of light on land, underwater those illuminating rays flicker and shift. To get the best light exposure underwater, try and stay to the shallows and shoot on a bright day when sunlight has the chance to penetrate the darker parts of water. If, however, you find that natural lighting just won’t help you capture that prized image, use a flash or an external flash.

Backscatter Tricks

When shooting underwater you may have noticed that your images are interrupted by a scattering of white dots and flecks. These are particles in the water reflected in the flash of your bulb.

As amazing as it is finding these specks appear out of- supposedly- nowhere, they do nothing but ruin your perfect image. To help remove backscatter from your shot, angle your external flash towards your lens to reduce reflection.

Up Close and Personal

If you’re shooting in open waters, your favourite shot might be of a coral reef teeming with life, or of a model posing underwater. To get great detailed shots, the trick is to get close and personal. While we may linger a couple of steps away from our models on land, being underwater eradicates this barrier, allowing you to get as close to your model as you wish in order to get those perfect shots.

Experiment with Angles

Some of the best underwater shots are found towards the surface of the river, pool or sea you’re shooting in, where light plays havoc on the water. You can have a lot of fun experimenting with different shading and shapes here, split your world in half by shooting half submerged in water or position your lens towards the surface of the water for a stunningly distorted image.

Shooting in the rain can also conjure up some truly magical images of raindrops on the surface of a body of water.

To take those perfect shots, however, you’ll need to make sure your camera is waterproof.
