Do you believe? The Most Famous UFO Photos
We all cherish our cameras. After all, they capture some of our fondest memories, catalogue our travels, and make sure cherished family moments last a lifetime.
But that’s not all they can do, cameras have even helped fan the flame of the paranormal investigation. Ghostly images, mysterious creatures and UFOs have all been ‘caught on film’ in some way or another. Usually a whitish smudge or distant blur, but that hasn’t stopped pop culture, movies and people marvelling at them.
Perhaps the most influential has been the UFO, enthralling an entire generation. We’re going to a look at some of the more famous UFO photos, those strange spectacles that still today inspire some to look up – just in case!
Battle of Los Angeles, 1942
This strange spectacle was caught on film for the LA Times. It features a barrage of searchlights and anti-air artillery fire directed at what appears to be a series of unusual lights, to little avail. Furthermore, it has proven a great point for UFO enthusiasts and modern-day conspiracy theorists.
It was 1942, mere months after the USA joined WWII, the attack on Pearl Harbour still fresh in the minds of the American people. So when unexplained objects were seen in the sky, in a classic case of ‘war nerves’, they opened fire. Later, this was attributed to a lost weather balloon. But it left many still wondering…
Lago de Cote, Costa Rica, 1971
By order of the Costa Rican Government, a map mission was planned and accomplished by its Air Force. The crew were professional army personnel, and the equipment some of the best in the country, specially commissioned for this task.
The crew – consisting of a specialist in aerial photography, a geographer, a topographer, and a pilot – reported nothing during the routine flight at a fixed altitude of 10,000ft. However, when developing the recon photographs, a strange disc-like saucer was spotted over the coast line. A sight not unfamiliar to Puerto Rico.
However this picture was studied and showed no signs of doctoring or any usual warping or common double exposure. The strange object even appears on the negative. With no satisfactory answer, this photo has simply been dubbed ‘unexplained’.
Waterbury, Connecticut, 1987
Inspiring the likes of The X-Files, a pilot of 30 years’ experience by the name of Randy Etting was taking a walk when he spotted a strange approaching circle of red and orange lights. Grabbing some binoculars and fearing a crashing aircraft, he alerted the neighbours. But what happened next deeply unsettled him and others.
The crowd gathered by Interstate 84 as the strange object flew over. Randy claimed the lights shimmered and distorted, much like heat coming from a plane engine, but disturbingly, it never made a sound. Others even claim that, as it flew overhead, their cars and other electronics lost power. A strange account in such remote locations at the time has raised many questions, with a blurred picture the only evidence.
