But that said, getting the perfect pet photo isn’t always easy, especially when your subject refuses to stay put!

Lighting

As with any photograph, when it comes to pet photos, lighting is key.

As a handy tip, it’s best to avoid using the flash on your camera when photographing your pet.

Most pets don’t exactly appreciate the harsh light and can find it distracting or frightening. The flash on your camera also has a tendency to produce the ‘red eye effect’, which can leave you furry friend looking a little possessed!

If you want a great photo of your pet, then natural lighting is a much better option. So make sure to take advantage of this where possible.

With this in mind, photographing your pet outdoors is an ideal option. But beware, bright light can create harsh shadows.

That’s why overcast days tend to make for the best setting. If you do choose to do a photo shoot with your pet on a sunnier day, then try to find a shady spot, out of direct sunlight. This way you can catch your pet in the best possible light!

Photographing outside isn’t always practical. If you’re trying your hand at a little pet photography indoors, then make the most of the natural lighting in the room, by opening any curtains, so that the light can shine in.

Get Playful

Don’t forget to let your pets personality shine through either. You know you pet best, so make sure to capture their unique quirks and character too.

When it comes to photographing your pet, it’s not all about achieving the perfect pose either. Make sure to get a few fun, playful shots too, this will make the whole experience more fun for you and your pet, and this will be reflected in the photos you take!

Bribery is Best

Getting your pet to sit still and cooperate isn’t always easy. In fact, it can be almost impossible.

But there is something you can try to increase your chances of success – bribery! That’s right, a little bribery can go a long way towards ensuring your pet exhibits nothing less than model behaviour.

All pets have a weakness, whether this be their favourite toy, or a tasty treat, and you can use this to gain their cooperation and keep them motivated.

Practice Makes Perfect

When it comes to pet photography, it pays to be a little snap happy. Practice makes perfect, so prepare to be patient and make sure to take lots of photos!

Take A Few Close Ups

Don’t be afraid to change your perspective and get down on your pets level. This will allow you to snap a few close ups and get some more interesting shots.

Make sure to zoom in and capture some of your pets best features too, such as those expressive eyes, cute ears and pretty paws.
