360-Degree Virtual Reality Technology from Nokia
The camera exchange service we provide from our Camera Exchange Store throws out some incredible pieces of camera technology, so much so that it can be hard to believe our customers are willing to let them go! Having said that we don’t expect to be seeing the following piece of technology arriving any time soon…
Nokia Ozo
Nokia are in the process of developing a new virtual reality capture device that can actually record panoramic 360-degree views as well as capturing and delivering 3D sound. Revealed at a Los Angeles event, Ozo features eight cameras and microphones on a globe-like structure and is designed to be hand-held. According to Nokia, this device is due to go on sale by the end of the year, although the price is as yet unknown.
Real-Time Virtual Reality
A fantastically innovative piece of filming technology, the device allows the user to view real-time footage via a virtual reality headset. However, one criticism of the playback from the prototype is that the footage could occasionally be “muddy and out of focus”. According to a tech journalist who was lucky enough to try out the virtual reality headset, there was something of a delay in the playback from the device; “I would hear something behind me, and when I turned I would see the still-moving mouth of the person talking.”
Pre-Assembled Panoramic Image
A spokesman from Nokia boasted that Ozo “removes the need to pre-assemble a panoramic image,” which would of course have major time-saving implications with film production. This becomes an especially large selling point with Nokia looking to market the camera technology to Hollywood.
Chris Green, a consultant of Davies Murphy Group said, “We know there is a market there – the fact VR cameras are already being used in professional film and TV production shows the importance they now have. There’s room for lots more growth, and it’s a logical market for Nokia to dabble in.”
So watch this space!
We’re particularly excited about the future of camera technology; with mobile phones already boasting 4K capabilities, Ozo’s boasts may only be round the corner… we hope! The cameras we see on a daily basis offer some fantastic functions and are more than suited to capturing fantastic images and footage, so understandably we have particularly high hopes.
