5 Ways to Capture Award Winning Action Photo’s!

When it comes to capturing live action pictures, we want nothing but the best. We want the focus on our target object. We want a perfect crystallised image, frozen on our screen in fine detail. To help you capture great images time and time again, we’ve come up with a few tips.

Check Your Shutter Speed

Every photographer will know that, to capture perfect crystal clear photos, you need to use the correct shutter speed. If your shutter is too slow, you’ll miss your shot, or your focus point will be burred and out of shape.

Your shutter speed will depend solely on the speed of the object you wish to capture. If you’re trying to get the best fuel photo of cars, for instance, a shutter speed of 1/4000 will capture the detailing you want. If you’re snapping a much slower target such as joggers, pedestrians etc, a shutter speed of 1/250 will be better.
You can also alter your ISO and frame speed to help more light into your shot.

Anticipate Your Image

Capturing the perfect shot isn’t down to dumb luck. Anticipating where the action will be will help you gain the perfect shot. There are a couple of things you can do to prepare you for your anticipated shot.

• Understand what you’re shooting. If you have an idea how something will react you’ll be able to set up your camera at the perfect angle for the perfect photo.

• Have an image in your head, one you want to shoot. If you can picture the angle you want to shoot at, you’ll be better prepared to set yourself up for the best action shot.

Pre-focus Your Camera

Running hand in hand with anticipating your shot, setting up your camera before taking the image will greatly help you save time and effort when the shot comes.

Most great action images only give you one chance to capture the right angle, the right focus at the right time. The less time you spend fiddling around with angle and focus the better. Set your camera up in your anticipated shot, then focus.

Get the Perfect Angle

When setting yourself up it’s a good idea to know what you want. Do you want a Birdseye view of your focus point? What is your subject doing? Children and animals, for instance, produce a better photo if you’re on the same level as them.

Is there anything blocking your view? Action photo’s are there and gone in a blink of an eye, if you want a good image, you need to make sure you get a clear view!

Capture the Action

When you shoot your photo you want to make sure you know that you capture the moment in its entirety. Panning the camera will help you catch your subject in motion. Taking multiple shots will ensure that nothing is missed!
