Pro vs. Amateur: Choosing a Wedding Photographer
Considering your wedding day is supposed to be one of the best days of your life, it’s not surprising that there is a lot of importance put on finding the perfect photographer.
If you’ve already started planning your big day, you have probably realised by now that things don’t come cheap. As soon as you mention the word ‘wedding’, its like things get even more expensive. This is when people look to cut corners, turning their attention to those who have less experience and therefore a lower price tag.
As a company who helps people sell second hand cameras, we like to think that we’re pretty clued up on what makes a good photo. We also know that the best photos don’t always come from someone who has years of professional experience. However, it’s a huge decision to make.
If you’re torn between hiring a professional or an amateur…consider the following things.
A Lot of Couples Regret Not Hiring a Professional
In the rush of planning a wedding, it’s possible that some couples may get carried away with trying to save money any way that they can. If they feel like they can save some money by hiring a ‘new’ or ‘amateur’ photographer, then they may be inclined to do so.
However, a lot of couples admit that this is actually their number one regret on reflection. After the excitement of the wedding is over, the one thing you are left with is the photos. These will allow you to remember your wedding for a long time. If these aren’t perfect, you might regret not spending more money on the photographer.
Don’t Ask Friends or Family
If a friend or family member is pretty handy with a camera, it might be tempting to ask them to take your wedding photos. They will either agree to do it for free or it won’t cost you very much at all. Whilst this may sound like a good idea, a lot of people would advise against it.
If a loved one agrees to be your photographer, they are likely to see it as doing you a favour. Therefore, they will treat it like one on the day. They are there to enjoy your day, so will probably not be taking photos at all times. They may miss important moments or not take it as seriously as you would want.
Always Ask For Samples of Work
Whether you’re hiring a professional or amateur photographer, you should always ask for samples of previous work. A lot of people have different styles when it comes to taking pictures, so you will want to make sure that you’re happy with theirs – it might not match your vision.
No one should be surprised that you’ve asked to see their work – this is normal. If someone does refuse to show you, then you definitely shouldn’t hire them.
Whatever you choose to go with – we wish you all the best!
