Wedding Photography For The Amateur
Weddings are an expensive business; so many couples look for ways to cut costs. One compromise that is often made to reduce expenses is looking to friends and family for help. Having creative and skilled family members is particularly useful when planning a wedding! If you’re a dab hand at photography, you may find yourself being dragged into the weddings of long lost cousins or friends of friends, but it is a great opportunity to polish your skills, and maybe make a little extra cash! We’ve put together a few quick tips for the amateur wedding photographer.
Communication Is Key
Make sure that you have a sit down with the couple before the big day to get an idea of what they are looking for. There may be particular photos that they want in their collection, so don’t leave it ‘til the day itself to find out.
Professionalism
Although this might be a friend or family member’s wedding, remember that you’re also there to capture their big day. Of course, you should have fun with it, but try to ensure that you’re always available as a photographer during the day and evening – don’t get too distracted by the open bar!
Be Creative
This is a great chance for you to play around and experiment. It’s a brilliant learning opportunity that you may be being paid for. Try out some different angles and viewpoints that you might not usually go for.
Be Prepared
Professional wedding photographers carry around kits full of extras and spares to make sure they’re never caught short on battery life or memory. As an amateur, you’re unlikely to have quite as much extra kit, but it’s important to make sure that you can carry on taking photos into the night. Bring spare batteries and memory cards to be sure that you won’t run out.
Candid Shots
Some of the best wedding photos you will see are those where the subjects don’t know they’re being photographed. Try to get candid shots of the guests as well as the happy couple, as these photos are often some of the most treasured.
